Start safely and identify your model

Know which generator you have, what this course covers, and when to stop before you start.

A useful first step, every time

This course covers owner-level checks for the installed RVMP Flex Power 2800i, 2800e, 4000i, 4000e, 4000em, 5500i, and 5500e generators. Portable generators have different controls and operating requirements; their manuals are available in the library.

  1. Read the model and serial number from the equipment label. Include the letter suffix: 4000i, 4000e, and 4000em are different models.
  2. Open the matching owner’s manual. Check the cover, control-panel illustrations, and revision against your equipment.
  3. Record the fuel selected, operating hours, indicator lights, and what happened immediately before the problem.

Stop before troubleshooting if there is a hazard

Do not operate with suspected fuel or exhaust leaks, damaged electrical parts, smoke, or unusual mechanical noise. Keep people away and arrange qualified service. If a CO alarm sounds or anyone may be exposed to exhaust, move everyone to fresh air immediately and seek emergency help. Do not remain near the generator to diagnose it.

Owner checks and service work

Owner checks include reading indicators, identifying the model, reviewing the fuel selection and load, and following the manual’s oil-level inspection. Internal electrical tests, fuel-system repairs, ECU diagnosis, exhaust modifications, and running adjustments belong with trained service personnel.

Before any hands-on inspection, stop the engine, let hot parts cool, and follow the manual’s procedure to prevent accidental or remote starting. The installed-generator manuals specify disconnecting the negative battery cable before working on the generator. If you cannot safely perform the required isolation, use a service professional. Never bypass a protective device or use starting fluid.

Try it

Write down your exact model, serial number, and manual revision. Keep them beside you for the remaining lessons.
